7.1 Retail Pharmacy Facilities

More than 4.4 billion prescriptions were dispensed by chain, independent, and grocery retail stores along with mail-order warehouse pharmacies in 2016. The number has grown since then, and most pharmacy technicians work in one of these nonhospital settings.

Most community retail pharmacies are divided into a restricted, secure prescription area offering prescription merchandise and related items, and an open retail area in front offering OTC drugs, dietary supplements, medical supplies, and other merchandise.

Most community pharmacies are divided into two store areas: an unrestricted retail front area that houses over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, medical supplies, dietary supplements, and other merchandise; and a back area restricted to pharmacy personnel only. The back area is where the prescription medications are stored and prepared for dispensing, and it is secured and off-limits to the public (no family or friends are allowed). The pharmacy counter and a transparent shield often separate these two areas.

If there is no pharmacist on duty (even if a technician is present), this glassed-off section must be closed and locked according to most state laws. The remainder of the store may remain open to sell any other merchandise or products, including OTC drugs and dietary supplements.

Patient convenience is important. Community pharmacies, especially chain store pharmacies, have hours of operation that accommodate working families, shift workers, and patients recently discharged from emergency rooms and hospitals. Many offer a drive-through area for prescription drop-off and pickup. Drive-through pharmacies are especially convenient for parents with children, the elderly, and those with physical limitations or disabilities. Community pharmacies may also partner with home healthcare or hospice services to dispense (and deliver) narcotic pain-relieving medications to terminal patients in their care. Numerous independent pharmacies also offer free delivery for homebound patients without transportation.
